There is no single document bundle that works for every German university application. Requirements can change by programme, degree level, university, intake, country of qualification, application route, and applicant status.
The safest method is to create a separate checklist for every programme and trace every requirement to an official source. This guide shows Indian applicants how to do that without over-certifying documents, missing a second application step, or confusing admission, enrolment, and visa requirements.
Last reviewed: June 7, 2026. Always use the current programme page, application portal, university regulations, uni-assist country notes, and APS instructions for your case.
Use sources in this order:
A blog, social-media post, consultant checklist, or another applicant's file cannot override these sources.
DAAD confirms that the application route and required documents vary by subject and institution. Start with the DAAD application-process overview, then verify the programme itself.
Create one row per programme:

Do not merge the rows into one generic checklist. A document required by one university can be irrelevant or formatted incorrectly for another.
Before assembling files, establish which qualification is being evaluated.
Possible evidence includes:
Whether Class XII permits direct admission, subject-restricted admission, or a Studienkolleg route depends on the qualification and current evaluation rules. Use the uni-assist admission checker and the university's decision process; these tools do not replace the final university decision.
Possible evidence includes:
A master's university may evaluate the content and credits of the previous degree, not only the final CGPA.
The uni-assist India country page currently gives detailed requirements for Indian qualifications.
For an Indian Class XII school-leaving qualification, uni-assist asks for:
For study completed at an Indian institution, uni-assist asks for:
The required grading-system evidence is frequently missed. The minimum for passing one module is not necessarily the minimum for award of the degree. Use regulations or an official institutional document that applies to your programme and batch.
Uni-assist's current India notes accept a provisional degree certificate only when it is issued by a university or autonomous college and only for 12 months after completion. If the final degree has not been issued after that period, uni-assist asks for an official university letter stating the expected issue or convocation date.
This is a uni-assist rule. A direct-application university may use different conditions, so verify both sources.
APS verifies academic documents; it does not decide university admission. The required procedure, document set, fee, interview or verification method, and exemptions depend on the applicant's route.
For uni-assist applications using Indian qualifications:
Read the current instructions on APS India and the APS digital-certificate guidance.
Do not describe APS as universally required for every person connected with India. Official exemptions and special procedures can apply. Also do not assume that APS must always be completed before every university application; the programme and application route determine submission timing.
For a fuller route review, use the APS guide.
An academic bundle may need more than a degree certificate and transcript.
Check whether the programme asks for:
Do not create your own official-looking credit conversion. If the programme asks for a self-assessment form, module mapping, or prerequisite table, follow its template and cite the source documents.
There is no national IELTS, TOEFL, TestDaF, DSH, or CEFR minimum for every degree.
Record:
Uni-assist explains that universities decide which language evidence they accept. Its language-certificate guidance also notes that only a few universities accept school-level English or language-of-instruction evidence as English proof.
Do not use an IELTS/TOEFL conversion tool as evidence that a university will accept a different test.
The following are common but not universal:
Follow the programme's required language, format, length, chronology, signature, and content. A gap-free chronology may be requested, but it is not a universal admission rule for all programmes. Do not add a photograph or sensitive personal details unless you choose to and the request is lawful and relevant.
Check:
Submit accurate, personal work. Invented projects, copied text, fake citations, or concealed third-party authorship can create admission and enrolment consequences.
Confirm:
Never fabricate, edit, or submit a letter without the referee's informed approval.
These requirements can have separate registration windows and deadlines. A university application may be incomplete even when the main portal shows uploaded academic documents.
For uni-assist:
Read the current uni-assist translation guidance.
If a document was officially issued in English, a separate translation may not be needed under uni-assist's general rule, subject to country-specific exceptions. A university applying its own procedure may state different accepted languages.
Do not assume that every translation made by a notary, agency, or local translator is accepted. Verify the translator's authority and the receiving institution's rule before paying.
The submission format is part of the requirement.
Possible instructions include:
Uni-assist's sending-an-application guidance distinguishes online-only procedures from those requiring certified copies by post. Documents such as CVs, motivation letters, internship proof, and recommendations usually do not require certification unless the university says otherwise.
Therefore:
Submit through the university's official portal and follow its document-status messages. Some programmes use a separate faculty portal or require an additional form.
Uni-assist checks the formal application and forwards eligible applications under the university's arrangement. The university makes the admission decision.
A VPD is not an application to the university.
Under the current uni-assist VPD guidance:
Uni-assist currently states that a VPD usually takes four to six weeks and is valid for one year from issue, but individual processing can take longer. Its general recommendation is to apply at least eight weeks before the deadline. Check the live processing page rather than planning to the minimum.
Some programmes require registration with Hochschulstart and identifiers such as BID and BAN in addition to the university or uni-assist process. Follow the exact current programme instructions.
Do not rely on July 15 and January 15 as universal deadlines. They are common dates, not national guarantees. Master's programmes, Studienkolleg, aptitude-tested programmes, international applicants, and VPD routes often use different or earlier dates.
For every programme record:
Clarify whether the deadline means online submission, payment received, documents uploaded, postal documents received, or a separate university application completed.
Used to obtain an admission decision. It contains only the programme and route requirements.
Admission does not make an applicant a registered student. DAAD's enrolment guidance notes that universities set their own rules and commonly request admission evidence, identity or immigration documents, and health-insurance evidence.
Possible enrolment conditions include:
Read the admission letter and enrolment portal immediately because the deadline may be short.
The German mission controls the visa checklist. Do not add blocked-account, insurance, motivation, or other visa documents to the university application unless the university separately requests them.
Use the student visa guide after confirming the current official mission checklist.
Uni-assist states that it does not cooperate with commercial agencies to place applicants. Treat claims of privileged access, guaranteed admission, or a special uni-assist relationship as warning signs.
Mark each item as required, not required, pending, or submitted for each programme.
No. Submit them when the programme or application route requests them. Follow the specified prompt and format.
No. The required form depends on the receiving institution and procedure. Some applications are online-only; others require certified copies or direct verification.
Sometimes. The accepted credits, provisional evidence, completion date, and final-submission condition are programme-specific. Uni-assist also has current India-specific limits for provisional degree certificates.
No universal sequence applies. Start APS early when your route requires it, but check whether a university accepts the application before APS, requires APS by its deadline, or applies an exemption.
No. In a VPD procedure, you must apply separately to the university and submit the VPD before its deadline.
Only if the programme explicitly accepts it. Uni-assist notes that few universities accept school-level English or language-of-instruction evidence as English proof.
Not automatically. Determine which destinations require postal certified copies. Online-only applications may need none, while later enrolment may require a different format.
The responsible evaluator applies its rules. A personal grade-calculator result is only an estimate and is not official evidence.
A strong application file is not the thickest file. It is the exact set of documents requested for one programme, in the required format, delivered through the correct route before every applicable deadline.
Build the matrix first. Then prepare, verify, and submit each item against its official source. This prevents the most common administrative failures: missing grading evidence, invalid provisional documents, altered digital APS files, unaccepted language proof, unnecessary certification, incomplete VPD follow-up, and missed enrolment conditions.
