German university deadlines are not set by one national calendar. The correct date can depend on the university, programme, degree level, applicant nationality, country of prior education, admission restriction, and whether the process uses Uni-Assist, a VPD, or the university's own portal.
This guide explains the common 2026-27 dates, shows real official examples, and gives Indian applicants a practical method for building a verified deadline calendar.
Last reviewed: 6 June 2026. Deadlines can change and programme pages control. Confirm every date on the university's official programme or admissions page before submitting.

Uni-Assist says the following dates apply to many, but not all, German programmes:
| Intake | Typical semester start | Common deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Winter Semester 2026-27 | September/October 2026 | Often July 15, 2026 |
| Summer Semester 2027 | March/April 2027 | Often January 15, 2027 |

These are reference dates, not a promise. Master's programmes, Studienkolleg applications, non-EU applicants, aptitude-assessment programmes, and VPD procedures often have earlier cutoffs.
For example, official pages reviewed for Winter 2026-27 show:
| Official example | Winter 2026-27 deadline |
|---|---|
| RWTH Aachen, Software Systems Engineering, non-EU/EEA applicants | March 1, 2026 |
| Heidelberg, Molecular Biotechnology M.Sc. | March 15, 2026 |
| TUM, Electrical and Computer Engineering M.Sc. | May 31, 2026 |
| University of Mannheim master's programmes | May 15, May 31, or July 15, 2026, depending on programme |

The only safe rule is: check the exact programme page, applicant category, procedure, and deadline year.
The winter semester is the larger intake at many German universities, and many programmes only offer first-semester admission in winter. However, availability is programme-specific.
Administrative semesters commonly run October-March and April-September, while lecture periods start later and vary by university. A summer start is a separate first-semester intake where offered; students do not simply join a winter cohort halfway through its curriculum.
Summer intake generally offers fewer first-semester choices. Do not assume availability from the subject area alone: check whether the exact programme permits a first-semester start in Summer 2027.
For most Indian students applying to engineering, computer science, data science, or natural sciences at public universities: winter semester is your target. Plan your entire timeline around October 2026.
If you are considering summer intake, know that the January 15 deadline falls right after the holiday season, which means you need your documents, SOP, and APS certificate ready by December — a time when Indian universities are often slow to issue transcripts.
As of 6 June 2026, some early Winter 2026-27 deadlines have already passed, while programmes using July 15 may still be open. Use the following as a planning framework, then replace every target with the official date for your programme.
| Timing | Action |
|---|---|
| 9-12 months before earliest deadline | Research programmes, check admission requirements, begin APS, and plan language/GRE tests if required |
| 6-9 months before | Request academic records, prepare translations where needed, and identify the application route |
| At least 8 weeks before a Uni-Assist or VPD deadline | Submit the paid application with complete documents, following Uni-Assist's recommendation |
| Before each programme deadline | Upload every required document in the required format and complete any separate university application |
| After admission | Prepare financial proof, insurance, and the Consular Services Portal student-visa application |
| Before enrolment | Meet the university's enrolment deadline and provide any final or certified documents it requests |

If a deadline has passed, do not submit an incomplete or improvised application. Check another open programme, Summer 2027 availability, or the next winter intake.

Uni-Assist evaluates international educational documents for participating universities. The university decides which procedure applies to each programme.
| Route | What happens |
|---|---|
| Uni-Assist standard procedure | You apply in My assist; after a positive evaluation, Uni-Assist forwards the application electronically to the university |
| VPD procedure | Uni-Assist issues a preliminary review document; you must then apply separately to the university before its deadline |
| Direct university application | You apply through the university's own portal without Uni-Assist for that programme |

Applications appear in My assist only after the university activates them. There is no reliable universal portal-opening month.
Uni-Assist recommends applying at least eight weeks before the deadline. Its published processing time for educational records from Asia was about four to five weeks when checked on 6 June 2026, but individual cases can take longer.
For a VPD, processing is only the first step. You must receive the VPD and submit it through the university's portal by the university deadline. A paid My assist submission alone is not the university application.
Before the applicable deadline:
Uni-Assist currently describes its process as fully digital, but the university may request certified or original-format documents later, especially for enrolment. Do not send originals unless an official instruction specifically requires them.
The standard Uni-Assist handling fee is €75 for the first chosen course and €30 for each additional chosen course in the same semester. The fee is not split into different VPD and standard-procedure price tiers.
See the complete Uni-Assist application guide for the full workflow.
Do not classify an entire university as permanently "direct" or "Uni-Assist." One institution can use different routes for different programmes and applicant groups.
| University/programme | Applicant scope | Official deadline |
|---|---|---|
| RWTH Aachen, Software Systems Engineering M.Sc. | Non-EU/EEA, first semester | March 1, 2026 |
| Heidelberg, Molecular Biotechnology M.Sc. | All applicants shown on programme page | March 15, 2026 |
| TUM, Electrical and Computer Engineering M.Sc. | Winter intake | May 31, 2026 |
| University of Mannheim master's programmes | Depends on programme | May 15, May 31, or July 15, 2026 |

These examples are not a shortlist or a complete deadline table. They demonstrate why a generic university-level date is unsafe.
Save a PDF or screenshot of the official deadline page with the date accessed. Programme pages can change between application cycles.
The APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) certificate is required for most Indian students applying to German universities. It's a document verification process run by the German Embassy in India that confirms your academic credentials are genuine and equivalent to German standards.
APS should be started early, but it does not use the standard appointment-booking sequence described in older unofficial guides.
APS states that it cannot currently give a fixed overall processing estimate because timing depends partly on responses from Indian institutions. It also advised in March 2026 that applicants should apply after completing the academic stage that determines their admission pathway. Do not invent a "latest safe APS booking date."
Because some university applications require APS and the student-visa process usually requires it, complete APS as early as your academic stage and the current APS guidance permit.
For a complete walkthrough of the APS process — what documents to bring, how to prepare for the interview, and what happens if your credentials are flagged — read the complete APS guide for Indian students.
For applicants in India, study-purpose national visa applications are available through the German Federal Foreign Office's Consular Services Portal (CSP). The portal guides the upload and pre-check process; after completing the required stage, the applicant receives the route to an on-site appointment.
The current official study checklist includes:
Accommodation proof is not listed as a standard mandatory upload on the February 2026 CSP study checklist. The mission can still request additional evidence in an individual case.
See the blocked account comparison guide, but verify provider availability and fees before paying.
There is no reliable nationwide promise of a fixed 6-, 8-, or 16-week end-to-end timeline. Appointment availability and case processing vary.
For the full visa process — documents required, what to expect at the interview, and how to respond to a request for additional documents — see the complete German student visa guide.
If the applicable deadline has expired, Uni-Assist says required documents submitted late cannot be forwarded for that application. In a VPD procedure, receiving the VPD after the university deadline does not complete the university application.
Check the official programme page for a later application round, clearing procedure, lottery, or another semester. Do not assume the university will create a direct route after its Uni-Assist deadline.
Treat a published deadline as binding. You may ask whether an official late or clearing procedure exists, but emailing an application file is not a substitute for submitting through the required portal.
If you've missed Winter 2026-27 entirely, your options are:
Missing a deadline is disappointing but not catastrophic. Many students use the extra year to strengthen their profile, retake English tests, gain work experience, or take a German language course. Some students who initially planned for winter entry find that the extra preparation time significantly improves their shortlist and SOP quality.
This calendar distinguishes known reference dates from programme-specific deadlines:
| Date | Milestone |
|---|---|
| Before applying | Verify the exact programme deadline, applicant category, and route |
| At least 8 weeks before a Uni-Assist/VPD deadline | Uni-Assist's recommended submission target |
| May 31, 2026 | Deadline for the TUM master's examples cited in this guide; not a TUM-wide deadline |
| July 15, 2026 | Common Winter 2026-27 deadline for many programmes, but not universal |
| After admission | Complete the CSP student-visa process and financial/insurance evidence |
| October 1, 2026 | Administrative winter-semester start at many universities |
| October 12, 2026 | Winter 2026-27 lecture start at TUM and some other institutions |
| January 15, 2027 | Common Summer 2027 reference deadline; verify the programme |

Do not shift a winter calendar by six months and assume it is correct. Summer opening dates, available programmes, and deadlines must be checked separately.
Q: Is July 15 the deadline for all German universities?
No. It is a common reference date for many winter applications. Uni-Assist applies the deadline set for the chosen university and programme, and both Uni-Assist and direct applications can close earlier.
Q: Can I apply without an APS certificate?
Applicants with Indian school or university qualifications almost always need APS for German university admission and the student visa, subject to official exemptions such as certain PhD/Postdoc applicants, recipients of German or EU public scholarships, applicants seeking a non-German degree, and holders of specified non-Indian or international qualifications. Check both APS and the programme instructions.
Q: What if my IELTS score arrives after the deadline?
Follow the programme's rule on missing documents. If the language certificate is required by the deadline and no later-submission rule is published, the application may be incomplete. Allow enough time for the test and certificate. See IELTS Score Required for German Universities 2026.
Q: Can I apply to both winter and summer intake simultaneously?
You may apply to multiple open cycles if the programmes permit it, but each application has its own deadline and requirements. Do not assume January 15 or July 15 applies without checking.
Q: How many universities should I apply to?
Before finalising your shortlist, convert your CGPA to the German system to understand which university tier is realistic for your profile — see CGPA to German GPA Conversion: How Universities Evaluate Indian Grades 2026.
A shortlist should be based on formal eligibility, curriculum fit, deadlines, cost, and realistic selectivity rather than arbitrary "safe" labels. Uni-Assist charges €75 for the first chosen course and €30 for each additional chosen course in the same semester, unless a university covers the fee.
Q: What documents do I need for a complete application?
See the complete document checklist for German university applications for a programme-specific breakdown. Academic records and proof of language are common, while APS, CV, motivation letter, recommendations, tests, module descriptions, and other evidence depend on the applicant and programme.
Q: I'm still in my final year of B.Tech. Can I apply?
Some programmes accept final-year applicants with a specified number of completed credits or a current transcript; others require the completed degree by the application deadline. Check the programme's exact rule. APS also updated its guidance in March 2026 on applying after completing the academic stage that determines the admission pathway.
Q: What is the full step-by-step application process?
Read the how to apply to a German university from India — 2026 guide for the end-to-end process from shortlisting to enrolment.
The German university application process has several linked stages: programme eligibility, APS, Uni-Assist or VPD where required, the university portal, enrolment, and the student visa. Each stage has its own evidence and deadline.
Build one spreadsheet row per programme. Record the official URL, applicant category, opening date, deadline, portal, document rules, fee, and date last checked. Recheck the official page before submission. The Germany Application Tracker provides a ready-made template — covering application route, APS, documents, and fees — with three example rows from real universities already filled in.
July 15 is a useful reminder, not Germany's universal application deadline.
