You've received your admission letter, your visa is stamped, and Germany is finally happening. But the weeks between visa approval and departure are where most Indian students make avoidable mistakes — missing documents, wrong currency amounts, banned food items at customs, medicine without prescriptions, or realising too late that their phone is carrier-locked. This month-by-month pre-departure checklist covers everything you need to do before leaving for Germany in 2026: documents, blocked account activation, currency exchange, medicines, power adapters, customs rules, and first-week readiness. Over 177+ Indian students have used Think Mile's guidance to land in Germany prepared and stress-free.

Last reviewed: 28 May 2026. This checklist uses the 2026 blocked account floor of €11,904/year (€992/month), current EU/German customs rules for food, medicines, and cash, and Germany's standard address-registration rule of registering within two weeks after moving into accommodation. Airline baggage, university enrollment, health insurance, and city registration processes vary, so recheck your airline ticket, university portal, insurance provider, and city website before travel.

💡 Think Mile Tip: Create a digital folder with scans of ALL documents. Store in cloud (Google Drive) and on your phone. If anything gets lost, you'll have backups.

Opening and funding the blocked account before the visa is not the end of the process. After you arrive, you usually need to:
Plan for a 1-2 week gap before the first monthly payout reaches your usable German bank account. This is why you need emergency cash/card funds even though the blocked account is already funded.
| Item | Amount | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Cash (Euros) | €200-€300 | Emergency, first day expenses |
| Forex Card | €500-€1,000 | Initial weeks before bank account |
| Indian bank backup | ₹50,000-₹1,00,000 | Backup, emergencies |

| Card | Features | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Niyo Global | Zero forex markup | Regular use |
| BookMyForex | Competitive rates | Large amounts |
| HDFC ForexPlus | Wide acceptance | HDFC customers |
| ICICI Forex Card | Good support | ICICI customers |

💡 Think Mile Tip: Load forex cards before arrival. ATM withdrawal limits and fees vary. Having €500-€1,000 on a forex card covers your first 2-3 weeks before blocked account transfers start.
Indian students often ask: "Should I carry more euros or rely on the card?" Here is the practical breakdown:
| What | Amount | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Cash euros | €200-€300 | First day transport, small purchases, machines that may not take cards |
| Forex card loaded | €500-€800 | First 2-3 weeks before blocked account kicks in |
| Wise / international debit backup | ₹50,000-₹1,00,000 | Emergency transfers to your German account |

Where to exchange in India:

How much is "enough": €500 total cash + forex covers your first week comfortably. Your blocked account monthly payout (€992/month for 2026) begins once you link your German IBAN — typically 1-2 weeks after arrival.
Do not carry huge cash unless there is a real reason. If you enter or leave the EU with €10,000 or more in cash or cash-equivalent instruments, you must declare it to customs. This threshold applies to the total value, including equivalent foreign currency and some negotiable instruments.
For normal student travel, €200-€300 cash plus cards is enough. Keep cash split across your wallet and document pouch, and keep receipts for currency exchange.
India commonly uses Type C/D/M plugs. Germany uses Type F (Schuko) — two round pins at 230V/50Hz.
| What You Need | Notes |
|---|---|
| Universal EU adapter | Converts Indian plug to Type F |
| Voltage compatibility | Most modern electronics (laptops, phones) handle 100-240V automatically — check your charger label |
| Extension cord with EU plug | Useful in dorms where sockets are limited |

Buy 2-3 adapters from Amazon India before leaving — they are cheaper than buying in Germany.
Germany follows EU customs rules. Getting this wrong can mean items confiscated at the airport, and in some cases a fine. The safest rule for students arriving from India is: carry only sealed, commercially packaged, plant-based dry foods, and avoid meat, milk, dairy, fresh produce, and homemade food.
| Item | Allowed? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dry spices (turmeric, cumin, coriander) | Usually okay | Keep sealed and labelled |
| Rice, dal, dried lentils | Usually okay | Commercial sealed packaging preferred |
| Ready-to-eat packets | Check ingredients | Avoid packets containing meat, milk, paneer, ghee, or dairy powder |
| Namkeen, snacks, biscuits | Check ingredients | Avoid dairy/meat ingredients where possible |
| Papad, dry snacks | Usually okay | Packaged and sealed |
| Tea, coffee, masala tea mix | Usually okay | Check if milk powder is included |
| Asafoetida (hing), dried herbs | Usually okay | Keep labelled |
| Pickles | Risk depends on ingredients | Prefer sealed vegetarian pickles; avoid homemade jars and leakage |
Swipe horizontally to see more
| Item | Status | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh meat, poultry | Banned | Animal products from non-EU |
| Fresh dairy (milk, paneer, curd) | Banned | Animal products |
| Ghee, butter, cheese, paneer, milk sweets | Do not carry | Dairy products from non-EU countries are restricted |
| Fresh fruits and vegetables | Avoid | Plant-health controls; certificates may be required |
| Homemade food (curries, dal) | Banned | Unpackaged animal products |
| Raw eggs | Banned | Animal products |

Bottom line: Carry sealed, dry, commercially packaged vegetarian food for the first few days only. Leave fresh, homemade, or meat/dairy items behind. Indian grocery stores exist in Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Cologne, Hamburg, and many university towns — you will find rice, dal, hing, curry leaves, frozen parathas, and most spices after arriving.
If you fly from India to Germany, the general duty-free traveller allowance for goods is €430 for air travellers. This is about goods you bring from outside the EU, not about your old personal clothes. If you carry new expensive electronics, jewellery, or sealed goods that look commercial, keep invoices and be ready to explain they are for personal use.

Important Notes:
Do not rely on a generic blog table for baggage. Your exact allowance depends on airline, fare family, student offer, route, and whether your ticket is issued on one airline or a codeshare.
Before packing, check:
Rule of thumb: if your ticket says 2 × 23 kg, keep each bag under 22.5 kg at home. Airport scales differ, and repacking at the counter is stressful.

When booking, check whether the address is Anmeldung-ready and whether the host can provide the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung. You usually need address registration within two weeks after moving into accommodation in Germany, and the registration certificate is often needed for bank account, tax ID, residence permit, and university admin.
Hostels and hotels may work for your first few nights, but they often do not support Anmeldung. If your first booking is not Anmeldung-ready, plan a second accommodation option quickly.

This article was reviewed against Make it in Germany's student visa financial proof guidance, the Federal Foreign Office blocked account page, German Missions India student visa checklist, DAAD registration guidance, EU personal food import rules, German customs traveller allowances, EU cash control rules, and German Federal Health Ministry guidance on medicines from abroad. Airline and university rules change often, so verify the live ticket and university portal.
1. How much cash should I carry in euros? €200-€300 in cash is sufficient. Most payments in Germany are card or digital. Cash is for emergencies and small purchases where cards aren't accepted.
If you carry €10,000 or more in cash or cash-equivalent instruments when entering the EU, you must declare it to customs.
2. Can I carry Indian food items to Germany? Packaged dry vegetarian foods such as spices, dal, rice, tea, and snacks are usually lower risk if sealed and labelled. Do not carry meat, dairy, ghee, paneer, milk sweets, fresh fruits/vegetables, or homemade food. Check current EU import rules before packing.
3. Do I need to carry a lot of winter clothes? No. Carry one warm jacket and layers for arrival. German winter clothes are high quality and often cheaper during sales (November-February).
4. Should I activate international roaming? Yes, temporarily. Activate for arrival day, then buy a German SIM card within 1-2 days. German prepaid SIMs are affordable (Aldi Talk: €10–15/month).
5. What if my checked bag is lost? This is why critical documents should be in carry-on. Report to airline immediately, file claim, and buy essentials (keep receipts for reimbursement).
6. How early should I reach the airport? 3 hours before departure for international flights. This allows time for check-in, security, and immigration.
7. Can I carry my pressure cooker in checked luggage? Yes, pressure cookers are allowed in checked baggage. Remove any residue and pack securely.
8. Do I need a return ticket for the visa or entry? No. German student visa doesn't require return ticket. One-way bookings are fine.
9. What's the best day/time to fly? Early morning arrivals give you a full day to reach accommodation and settle. Mid-week flights (Tue-Thu) are often cheaper.
10. Should I exchange all money before leaving India? No. Carry €200-€300 cash and load forex card. You'll open a German bank account within weeks and use that going forward.
11. Can I carry my prescription medicines? Yes, but keep it to personal-use quantities, normally up to 3 months. Carry the prescription, doctor's letter, generic medicine name, dosage, and original packaging. Controlled/narcotic medicines need extra checking before travel.
12. What happens at German immigration? Show passport with visa, admission letter, and be ready to explain your study plans. Questions are usually simple. Keep accommodation proof handy.
13. Do I need Anmeldung immediately after landing? You usually register within two weeks after moving into accommodation, not necessarily within two weeks of landing if you spend the first few nights in a hotel/hostel. But you need an Anmeldung-ready address soon because banks, tax ID, residence permit, and university admin often depend on it.
