IELTS Score for Germany 2026: Programme Requirements for Indians

There is no single IELTS score for Germany, for TU9 universities, or for all English-taught master's programmes.

The exact programme or faculty decides the accepted test, overall score, component scores, validity date, waiver rules, submission method, and whether newer formats such as IELTS Online or One Skill Retake are accepted.

IELTS Academic vs General Training

IELTS Academic is designed for higher-education admission. The General Training test has a different purpose and is not automatically interchangeable.

Use the exact test type listed by the programme. Do not assume that:

• IELTS General Training is accepted because the overall band scale is the same.
• IELTS for UKVI is necessary for a German university.
• IELTS Online Academic is accepted because in-centre Academic is accepted.
• The way the test is delivered changes its academic status. In India, IDP has discontinued IELTS on Paper; you now book either IELTS on Computer or IELTS Writing on Paper (Listening and Reading on computer, Writing by hand). What a programme checks is the test type it names, such as Academic, so read its wording rather than choosing a format because it sounds more formal.

TUM's current central language page, for example, lists IELTS Academic and IELTS Online Academic at an overall 6.5. That does not prove another university accepts IELTS Online.

Overall and Component Scores

An IELTS result contains:

• Listening
• Reading
• Writing
• Speaking
• Overall band score

Some programmes publish only an overall minimum. Others impose component minimums. Do not add a no band below 6.0 condition unless the programme actually states it.

Likewise, an overall 6.5 does not automatically satisfy a programme that requires 6.0 in each skill.

Read the wording carefully:

Example A: IELTS Academic overall 6.5
Example B: IELTS overall 6.5, no component below 6.0
Example C: IELTS Academic 7.0

These are three different requirements.

Dated Programme Examples

The examples below demonstrate variation. Recheck before applying.

TUM

TUM's central language-certificate page currently recognises:

• IELTS Academic with a minimum overall band of 6.5
• IELTS Online Academic with a minimum overall band of 6.5
• TOEFL iBT with a minimum of 88

TUM also describes ways to prove English through previous education. Individual programmes can define their own supporting conditions and required documents.

For example, TUM Mathematics in Data Science currently lists IELTS 6.5 and permits specified previous-study evidence. Do not generalise this to every TUM programme or claim TUM universally requires 7.0.

TU Berlin Faculty IV

Faculty IV currently requires IELTS overall 6.5 for the relevant master's programmes and warns that only its faculty-specific information applies. It does not accept every medium-of-instruction situation that another university might accept.

This is a useful example of why central university pages and other faculties cannot replace the target faculty's rule.

University of Stuttgart

Different Stuttgart programmes currently publish different requirements:

• COMMAS: IELTS minimum 6.0
• WASTE: IELTS Academic 6.5
• INFOTECH: IELTS Academic 7.0
• Computational Linguistics: IELTS Academic 7.0

INFOTECH and Computational Linguistics also state that a generic medium-of-instruction certificate is not accepted, subject to their listed exceptions.

The university name alone cannot tell you the required score.

University Type and Subject Are Not Score Rules

The original article's claims that:

• TU9 normally requires 6.5 or 7.0,
• top-ranked universities require 7.0,
• Fachhochschulen normally require 6.0,
• business always requires more than engineering,

are not dependable admissions rules.

Programme language requirements can reflect:

• Academic regulations
• Teaching and assessment format
• Faculty policy
• Accreditation
• Scholarship conditions
• Programme-specific selection

Use official requirements, not ranking, institution type, competitiveness, or field stereotypes.

Previous Education and Medium of Instruction

Waiver rules vary substantially.

A programme may accept:

• A complete previous degree taught in English
• A defined number of English-taught credits
• A graded thesis written in English
• Education in a listed English-speaking country
• A particular school-leaving qualification

Another programme may reject a generic Medium of Instruction letter.

Examples:

• TUM's central guidance recognises specified previous-education evidence.
• TUM Mathematics in Data Science currently accepts a graded thesis in English or at least 10 credits in English-language examination modules.
• TUM ESPACE currently uses different credit and thesis conditions.
• Stuttgart INFOTECH states that MOI is not accepted outside its listed exceptions.
• TU Berlin Faculty IV applies its own definition of native-English education.

Never submit only an MOI letter unless the target programme confirms it meets the rule.

Validity Is Set by the Recipient

IELTS recommends that results demonstrate current English ability for a maximum of two years. That recommendation is widely used, but the receiving institution sets its acceptance policy.

A programme can require the certificate to be valid:

• On the application deadline
• On the enrolment date
• At another defined point

Stuttgart INFOTECH and Computational Linguistics currently state that certificates such as IELTS must be valid at least until the application deadline.

Do not calculate validity only from the intended semester start. Check the exact controlling date.

IELTS One Skill Retake

IELTS One Skill Retake lets an eligible test taker repeat one skill:

• Only after an IELTS on computer test at a participating centre
• Once per original full test
• Within 60 days of the original test

It produces a new Test Report Form showing the retaken skill.

The recipient must accept One Skill Retake. An institution's acceptance of ordinary IELTS does not automatically establish acceptance of this result.

Before booking:

1. Check availability at the original test centre.
2. Obtain confirmation that the exact programme accepts One Skill Retake.
3. Confirm the application deadline.
4. Check how the new TRF must be submitted.

For India, IDP currently lists a 2026 One Skill Retake fee of INR 12,650.

TOEFL, Cambridge, PTE, Duolingo, and Other Tests

There is no universal IELTS-to-TOEFL conversion used by German universities.

Each programme publishes its own accepted scores. For example:

• TUM currently pairs IELTS 6.5 with TOEFL iBT 88 in its central list.
• Stuttgart WASTE currently lists IELTS 6.5 and TOEFL iBT 88.
• Stuttgart INFOTECH currently lists IELTS 7.0 and TOEFL requirements under its current and 2026 scoring systems.
• Stuttgart COMMAS currently lists IELTS 6.0 and TOEFL iBT 80.

This does not create a conversion formula. Submit a score that independently meets the target programme's rule.

TOEFL iBT also changed its score scale on 21 January 2026. Tests taken from that date report a total from 1 to 6 in half-point steps, and for two years ETS prints a comparable 0-120 total on the same score report. In ETS's own comparison table, a 5 corresponds to 95 and above on the old scale, a 4.5 to 86 and above, and a 4 to 72 and above.

That creates a trap: a programme page that still says TOEFL iBT 88 was written for the old scale, and a new 4.5 covers old totals from 86, so it does not by itself show you reached 88. Check whether the programme has published a 1-6 minimum, as Stuttgart INFOTECH has, and if it has not, ask the admissions office which figure on your score report it will use. The same principle applies to:

• Cambridge certificates
• PTE Academic
• Oxford Test of English
• telc English
• Duolingo English Test

Do not take Duolingo, PTE, or another alternative until the exact programme lists it for the relevant intake. Even then, check the visa side first: the German missions in India do not recognise Duolingo, Pearson PTE, or TOEFL home edition results for visa applications in India (see the visa section below).

English-Taught, German-Taught, and Bilingual Programmes

English-Taught

The programme may require an accepted English test or a permitted alternative proof.

German-Taught

The programme normally requires recognised German evidence, such as TestDaF, DSH, or another certificate listed by the institution. IELTS does not prove German.

Bilingual or Mixed

A programme may require:

• English and German at application
• One language at application and another later
• Different evidence for modules, electives, or enrolment

Read the programme's exact language table and admission regulations. The title English-taught does not prove that no German evidence is ever required.

Admission Evidence vs German Student-Visa Evidence

University admission and visa review are separate.

The current German student-visa checklist for India states that proof of language proficiency in the course language may be required when sufficient proficiency is not confirmed in the admission letter. It lists recognised English evidence such as IELTS, TOEFL, and Cambridge.

The checklist available in June 2026 also states that current language proof should not be older than one year, unless the admission letter confirms sufficient language proficiency.

The missions' page on visas for studies (dated 16.02.2026) is more specific on two points that applicants often miss.

First, the level. For applicants entering Bachelor's or Master's studies directly, it says the generally required level is C1, whether the studies are in German or English. For a preparatory course it names B1 for a German-taught course and B2 for an English-taught one. The page does not translate C1 into an IELTS band, so do not assume your programme's minimum band automatically satisfies it; if your admission letter does not confirm your language level, ask before you apply.

Second, the test. The page lists IELTS among the recognised English certificates and then states: "Please note that neither Duolingo tests nor Pearson PTE or TOEFL home edition tests are recognized for applications in India." A university may accept one of those tests for admission and the visa section may still not accept it as language proof. If your offer rests on Duolingo, PTE, or a TOEFL taken at home, plan a recognised test early enough for the visa file.

The German missions in India additionally explain that a generic exemption or medium-of-instruction letter may not replace a recognised certificate when the visa section requests one. A university confirmation is sufficient only in the circumstances stated by the mission.

Therefore:

• A university waiver does not always settle the visa evidence question.
• An IELTS result accepted by a university under its two-year policy may still need separate checking against the current visa checklist.
• The visa section can request additional proof.

Use the current checklist for your visa category and mission at the time of application.

What to Do If Your Score Is Below a Requirement

1. Confirm the Actual Deficit

Check whether the issue is:

• Overall band
• One component
• Wrong IELTS type
• Expired result
• Unaccepted online or retake format
• Missing electronic verification

2. Check Permitted Alternatives

The programme may accept:

• Another approved test
• Specific previous-study evidence
• A later submission, only if explicitly allowed

Do not ask an admissions office to ignore a hard regulatory minimum.

3. Consider a Full Retake

IELTS permits another full test when you feel ready. There is no universal preparation period or guaranteed improvement after one or two attempts.

Use official score feedback and practice materials to target the relevant skill.

4. Consider One Skill Retake

Use it only when eligible and explicitly accepted by the programme.

5. Apply to Programmes You Actually Satisfy

Do not infer eligibility from university type. Build the matrix from official programme pages.

Work backwards from the earliest language-proof deadline.

Allow time for:

• Result release

There is no universal rule to take IELTS exactly six months before the deadline.

The safest date depends on:

• Current skill level
• Test format
• City availability
• Programme deadline
• Whether the programme permits later proof
• Visa timeline

Do not use generic winter- or summer-intake deadline tables; German programme deadlines vary widely.

IELTS Fees and Booking in India

As of 9 October 2026, IDP India lists:

IDP India's fee page now states that IELTS on Paper has been discontinued. Its replacement, IELTS Writing on Paper, has you take Listening and Reading on a computer and write the Writing section by hand. The fee is the same INR 19,000 for either option, for both Academic and General Training.

If an older blog, coaching centre, or agent tells you to "book the paper test", that product no longer exists in India. Ask which of the two current options they mean, and check One Skill Retake eligibility for that option with the test centre before you book, because the retake rules described above were written for IELTS on computer.

The fee for an additional electronic TRF after the first five (INR 350 per institution) was last checked on 6 June 2026 and is not shown on the current fee page.

Fees can change. Verify them before payment.

The British Council stopped delivering IELTS tests in India on 25 July 2021. IDP is the sole IELTS test distributor in India, while the British Council continues to offer preparation resources and courses.

Book through the official IDP IELTS India site. Beware of sellers offering results or TRFs without a test.

Submitting and Verifying Results

Follow the programme's instructions.

Possible methods include:

• Uploading the Test Report Form
• Entering a TRF or Unique Identifier Number
• Sending results electronically
• Using an institution code
• Uploading a portal screenshot for initial verification

TUM currently asks applicants to upload the TRF or Unique Identifier Number for IELTS.

Do not assume every German university needs a paper TRF sent directly. Do not upload only a candidate screenshot when official verification is required.

Check:

1. Name matches the application.
2. Test type is accepted.
3. Score meets overall and component rules.
4. Result is valid on the required date.
5. Delivery is complete before the deadline.

Preparation Guidance

Use official IELTS materials to understand:

• Task format
• Timing
• Scoring criteria
• Sample responses
• Computer or paper interface

Writing is assessed through task achievement or response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy. Speaking is assessed through its published criteria.

Avoid demographic claims such as "Indian students usually fail Writing" unless supported by current, relevant data. Diagnose your own practice results.

Do not rely on a particular accent podcast, commercial channel, or old Cambridge book list as a guaranteed route to a score.
