Moving from India to Germany can produce genuine culture shock, but no list describes every Indian student or every German city. Experiences differ by language, budget, university, housing, health, personality, and support network.
This guide focuses on surprises that create practical risk. It separates nationwide rules from local practice and gives you a control for each issue.

Germany's Federal Registration Act generally requires a person who moves into a dwelling to register within two weeks. The trigger is moving into the dwelling, not the date your flight lands.
You usually need a housing-provider confirmation, or Wohnungsgeberbestatigung. Under Section 19 of the Act:
Temporary accommodation creates uncertainty because not every booking constitutes moving into a registrable dwelling. Ask before paying:
Do not pay for a false registration address.

See the first-week arrival guide for a dependency-based registration sequence.
Students often expect a fixed sequence such as registration, bank, insurance, enrolment, and residence permit. In reality, the dependencies vary:

Use your university, insurer, bank, and local authority as the sources for their own processes. Appointment availability and processing times are local and should not be predicted from another city.
Affordable student housing is constrained in many university cities. Deutsches Studierendenwerk identifies accommodation as a major problem for international students, but that does not create one nationwide rent, application count, or waiting time.
Include:
For ordinary residential leases, Section 551 of the German Civil Code limits a cash security deposit to three months of rent excluding operating-cost advances. Tenants are entitled to pay that cash deposit in three equal monthly instalments, with the first due at the start of the tenancy.
The German consumer centres advise against paying for a dwelling you have not viewed and warn about fake landlords who claim to be abroad, offer to mail keys, or demand money before the tenancy begins.

Most ordinary retail shops are closed on Sundays and public holidays, but rules and exceptions come from state law and local practice. Railway-station or airport shops, petrol stations, bakeries, restaurants, and pharmacies on emergency duty may operate under specific conditions.
Do not assume:
Save the opening hours for your nearest supermarket and the official local emergency-pharmacy search. Buy essential food and medication before a Sunday or public holiday.
For urgent medical needs outside normal practice hours, Germany's medical on-call service is 116117. For life-threatening situations or risk of permanent harm, call 112.

Card and mobile payments are common, but acceptance varies by merchant, payment network, minimum transaction, terminal availability, and local practice. A university cafeteria may use a campus card; a small business may accept only cash or a particular debit-card network.
Use redundancy:
For international transfers, compare the total exchange rate, transfer fee, receiving fee, delivery method, regulation, and support. No provider is universally cheapest or fastest.
German higher education does not have one assessment system. Depending on the programme, you may encounter:
The examination regulations, programme regulations, module handbook, and examination office are authoritative. Do not rely on another student's rule from a different cohort.
During orientation:
Academic independence does not mean professors "do not care if you fail." It means students are expected to manage formal rules and seek help early.
Many public programmes do not charge general tuition, but important exceptions exist:
Transport is not uniform either. The regular Deutschlandticket costs EUR 63 per month in 2026. Where a university and transport provider offer the Deutschlandsemesterticket, its price is 60% of the regular ticket, but adoption depends on local agreements.

Students at state or state-recognised universities must prove health and long-term care insurance status for enrolment. International students are included.
The correct route depends on factors such as age, previous coverage, employment, programme type, and whether an exemption from statutory student insurance is requested. Choosing private insurance or requesting an exemption can have consequences that are difficult or impossible to reverse during the course of study.
Before enrolling:
Do not choose an insurer solely because it is bundled with a blocked-account product.

For many students from third countries, the residence framework permits up to 140 full days or 280 half-days per year, with an alternative weekly calculation described in the current rules. Certain academic student jobs are treated differently, and self-employment requires separate attention.
That immigration allowance is not the same as:
In 2026:
A minijob is not automatically tax-free in every personal situation, and earning above its threshold does not mean every social-insurance contribution suddenly applies in the same way. Multiple jobs must be assessed together.
Before accepting work, verify the contract, hours, residence calculation, payroll classification, tax ID, insurance treatment, and whether the role affects study progress.

Language and delivery method vary. Some portals and offices provide English information; legally relevant decisions, contracts, examination notices, and local authority correspondence may be in German.
Control the risk:
Do not assume silence means approval or that every letter has a standard two- or four-week response period.
Germany has packaging, paper, organic, residual-waste, glass, hazardous-waste, and beverage-deposit systems, but the exact bins and collection rules vary by municipality and building.
At move-in:
Do not copy a universal colour chart from social media. A bin colour or accepted material can differ locally.
Short winter days, unfamiliar food, language load, academic pressure, housing insecurity, and separation from family can affect sleep, concentration, and mood. That does not mean every Indian student develops seasonal depression, nor should a blog diagnose it or prescribe a lamp, supplement, or treatment.
Useful preventive controls include:
The Studierendenwerke provide social and psychological counselling; services vary locally and are generally confidential, with many offers free to students.
For urgent, non-life-threatening medical help outside practice hours, use 116117. For a life-threatening emergency or risk of permanent injury, call 112. In a psychological crisis, the federal health portal also lists crisis services and the telephone counselling number 116123.

Re-check advice that:
The federal rule is generally two weeks after moving into a dwelling. Arrival and move-in may be different dates. Confirm how your accommodation and local registration authority apply the rule.
Section 19 of the Federal Registration Act says you must notify the registration authority without delay if the housing provider refuses or the confirmation is not received in time.
You may choose to, but for a cash security deposit covered by Section 551 BGB, the tenant has a statutory right to three equal monthly instalments. The maximum is generally three months of rent excluding operating-cost advances.
Most ordinary retail is closed, but state and local exceptions exist. Check actual local opening hours and emergency-pharmacy information.
No universal rule applies. Many do, but the binding answer is in your programme's examination regulations and portal process.
Proof of the relevant health-insurance status is required for enrolment at state and state-recognised universities. The appropriate public, private, exempt, or other recognised route depends on your circumstances.
Many third-country students have the 140-full-day or 280-half-day annual framework, with further rules and exceptions. Read your residence document and obtain advice for academic jobs, self-employment, internships, or multiple jobs.
The statutory minimum wage is EUR 13.90 gross per hour from 1 January 2026, subject to legal exceptions. The regular minijob earnings threshold is EUR 603 per month on average in 2026.
Start with your university's international and examination offices, the local Studierendenwerk's social and psychological counselling, your insurer, the local authority responsible for the process, and official federal information portals.
The most useful preparation is not memorising a list of national stereotypes. It is knowing which rule is federal, which process is local, which deadline belongs to your university, and which decision needs professional advice.
Build a written control system, preserve evidence, verify high-stakes claims with the responsible institution, and ask for help before a missed deadline becomes a larger problem.
