Your first week in Germany is not a universal seven-day sequence. Some students enrol before travelling, some cannot register an address until permanent housing begins, and some hold entry visas that remain valid for months.
The reliable approach is to sort tasks by:

Keep originals and essential copies in hand luggage, not checked baggage:
Border officials decide what evidence is required in an individual case. Do not rely on a scripted list of questions or assume that every journey ends with a German passport stamp. If Germany is not your first Schengen entry point, border processing may occur elsewhere.
Travellers entering from outside the EU must follow customs limits and restrictions. Personal-use goods may fall within allowances, while restricted goods or excess quantities may require declaration. In particular, animal products such as meat and dairy from non-EU countries are subject to strict rules.

On arrival:
Do not sign a handover record stating that everything is correct if it is not. Record missing furniture, damage, meter readings, and the number of keys.
Ask the person supplying the accommodation:
A booking-platform label such as "hostel," "Airbnb," "student hotel," or "sublet" does not by itself determine registration eligibility. The facts of the occupancy and the applicable registration rules matter.
Never pay for a false registration address. Section 19(6) of the Federal Registration Act prohibits making an address available for registration when the person neither moves in nor intends to move in.
You do not have to buy a German SIM on a specific day. Use roaming or a travel eSIM temporarily if it is affordable and reliable.
For a German prepaid SIM, the provider must verify subscriber identity before activation. The accepted identification method, supported passports, required address, activation time, plan price, and cancellation terms vary.

Before boarding:
A semester contribution does not automatically mean that every student has an active nationwide transport ticket. Institution, semester, activation, and local rules vary.
Locate:
Opening hours vary by state, municipality, shop type, and location. Many ordinary shops close on Sundays and public holidays, but do not rely on a universal closing time.
Admission does not make you an enrolled student. The university's enrolment deadline and conditions control the process and can be short.

The exact list comes from the university. Passport photos, paper attendance, an APS original, or a German bank transfer are not universal requirements.
DAAD advises that enrolment rules differ by institution and that late or incomplete enrolment can prevent matriculation. Use the DAAD enrolment guidance and your university's current instructions.
Health insurance is required for study in Germany, but the correct route depends on age, status, existing cover, and whether an exemption or recognition applies.
Do not assume that a bundled travel or incoming policy is sufficient for enrolment, or that switching from private to statutory insurance is always available later.

DAAD notes that every person in Germany must have health insurance and that international students must prove qualifying coverage for enrolment or, depending on origin, for the visa process.
Use the DAAD health-insurance guidance and obtain case-specific confirmation before changing insurance.
Section 17(1) of the Federal Registration Act generally requires a person who moves into a residence to register within two weeks of moving in. The trigger is moving into the residence, not landing at the airport.
Short stays and commercial accommodation can be subject to different rules. Ask the local registration authority if your initial arrangement is unclear.
Under Section 19, the housing provider or an authorised person must confirm the move-in. If the confirmation is refused or not received on time, the person required to register must inform the registration authority without delay.

If appointments are unavailable, retain dated evidence of attempts and contact the authority for instructions. Evidence of trying is sensible, but it is not an automatic waiver of a statutory deadline.

Many official documents arrive by post. Put your correct name on the letterbox and tell the housing provider if the format differs from your passport.
At first registration in Germany, new residents are automatically assigned a tax identification number. The Federal Central Tax Office states that if the letter has not arrived within three months of first registration, the number can be requested again online.
There is no official universal promise that the letter arrives in two to four weeks.

A German payment account can simplify rent, insurance, blocked-account payouts, salary payments, and direct debits. It is not safe to promise that a named bank will approve an account, accept every passport, or issue a card within a fixed number of days.

Bank requirements vary. Address registration is commonly useful, but it is incorrect to say that no bank account can be opened without a Meldebescheinigung.
Consumers legally resident in the EU may have a right to a basic payment account under the German Payment Accounts Act, subject to the statutory conditions. BaFin explains that a registered residence is not required for this account type if the applicant can provide a postal address.

Follow only your provider's current activation instructions. Required evidence, payout account, monthly amount, processing time, and first-payment timing can differ.

For most Indian degree students, the national entry visa is not the final long-term document. Check:
Apply for the appropriate residence title in good time before the current title expires. Save proof of submission and all authority messages.
Common evidence may include passport, visa, enrolment, registered address, health insurance, financing, biometric photo, and a fee. The responsible authority's checklist controls your case.
Do not wait for a physical residence card before asking how to preserve lawful status. Processing and appointment times vary by authority and case.

Course registration and examination registration are not always the same action. Missing an examination registration deadline can matter even when you attended the course.
The broadcasting contribution generally follows the rule one dwelling, one contribution, regardless of the number of residents or devices. As of June 2026, the contribution is EUR 18.36 per month per dwelling.
If you live in a WG:
Students are not automatically exempt. Certain benefit recipients, including qualifying BAfoeG recipients, may apply for exemption. An exemption for one housemate does not automatically exempt all others.

Not every task must be finished in seven days. Every time-sensitive task should have a confirmed owner, deadline, next action, and evidence.
The ten priorities above are ordered by urgency and legal deadline, not by which task actually blocks the next one. Several tasks cannot start until an earlier one produces a specific piece of evidence; others only feel sequential because this article lists them in order. The general Section 17 rule is two weeks from moving into a residence, not two weeks from airport arrival. Short-term and commercial accommodation can involve different provisions. Ask the local authority when the initial arrangement is unclear.
Section 19 requires the housing provider to cooperate. If confirmation is refused or not received in time, inform the registration authority without delay and retain evidence.
No universal rule supports that claim. Banks set account-specific verification requirements. A statutory basic account has separate protections and can use a postal address in qualifying cases.
Do not switch based on a generic recommendation. Ask the university and insurer which status applies, whether existing coverage is recognised, and what consequences an exemption from statutory insurance creates.
EUR 992 is the 2026 monthly funding reference, but actual payout arrangements depend on the account, deposited amount, activation, and provider terms. Check the provider dashboard and contract.
