One of the first useful things after landing in Germany is a working mobile phone with a German number. A local number is not a universal legal requirement for Anmeldung or every bank account, but it makes appointment calls, deliveries, employer contact, and SMS verification much easier. For Indian students, there is also the question of what to do with an existing Indian WhatsApp number and Indian bank OTPs. This guide covers current prepaid examples, network choice, eSIM options, activation, and managing both numbers.
Last reviewed: 6 June 2026. Mobile tariffs and promotional data allowances change frequently. The examples below were checked on provider pages on this date; verify the live price, billing period, network, speed cap, roaming terms, and activation documents before ordering.

Problems with keeping only Indian number:
Recommendation: Get a German SIM within your first week.
💡 Think Mile Tip: Keep your Indian SIM active (minimum recharge) for OTPs from Indian bank accounts and services. Use dual SIM or carry two phones initially.
| Aspect | Prepaid (Prepaid-Karte) | Contract (Vertrag) |

💡 Think Mile Tip: Start with prepaid. You can always switch to a contract later once you have a German bank account and Schufa history.
These are comparison anchors, not permanent recommendations. A four-week tariff is billed roughly 13 times per year.

Germany has four public mobile networks: Telekom, Vodafone, Telefónica/O2, and 1&1. Coverage varies by exact address, building, commute, device, tariff, and cell load. Check the Bundesnetzagentur mobile coverage map for your home, university, workplace, and regular rail route before choosing.

Managing your allowance:
Contract prices change through online discounts, young-person tariffs, handset financing, and temporary promotions. Compare the total cost over the minimum term, not only the headline monthly price:
| Cost item | Check before signing |
|---|---|
| Activation fee | One-time connection or setup charge |
| Introductory price | How long it lasts and the later standard price |
| Handset cost | Upfront payment plus device installments |
| Minimum term | Commonly 24 months, though monthly options exist |

| Roaming | EU/EEA terms and whether Switzerland/UK are included |

Some providers offer age-based "Young" tariffs or occasional student promotions. Eligibility, age limits, and proof requirements vary, so do not assume a general 10-20% student discount.

German law requires providers to collect accurate subscriber data and verify prepaid customers using an accepted identity procedure. Depending on the provider, this may be Video-Ident, eID, bank identification, shop verification, or Post-Ident.
If Video-Ident doesn't work:
💡 Think Mile Tip: Video-Ident can be frustrating with Indian passports. If it fails multiple times, use Post-Ident at a post office instead.
Your Indian phone will likely work if:
Check Your Phone:
| Band | Frequency | Used For |
|---|---|---|
| Band 3 | 1800 MHz | 4G LTE |
| Band 7 | 2600 MHz | 4G LTE |
| Band 20 | 800 MHz | 4G LTE (rural coverage) |
| Band 1 | 2100 MHz | 4G/5G depending on network deployment |
| Band 28 | 700 MHz | 4G/5G coverage |

Germany's 3G networks were shut down in 2021. Confirm VoLTE support, not just LTE data support, because voice service increasingly depends on 4G. Telekom plans to retire 2G by the end of June 2028, while Vodafone currently targets the end of 2030; Telefónica has not announced a date.
If your phone stubbornly refuses to connect to German networks—even after trying all the usual tricks—don't panic. Here's what you can do:
Consider a Cheap Backup Phone: Basic phones are available at Saturn, MediaMarkt, or supermarkets for €20–30. Perfect for emergencies or as a temporary fix.
Check Unlock Status: Contact your carrier to ensure your phone is unlocked for international use.
No German SIM Yet? Use a travel eSIM or your Indian roaming temporarily. An EU SIM from another country is intended for periodic roaming, not permanent use in Germany; fair-use surcharges can apply.
Before You Fly: Pick up an "unlocked" phone that supports European frequencies—popular options include unlocked models from Apple, Samsung, and OnePlus.
This way, you'll always have a working phone number—whether for finding your way to the Rathaus or texting Mom that you landed safely.
If your phone has Dual SIM:
If single SIM:
This is one of the most common questions from Indian students. You have three options:
| Option | How | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Keep Indian WhatsApp number | Use Dual SIM — keep Indian SIM active in SIM Slot 2 | Best option if family/friends contact you on Indian number |
| Port WhatsApp to German number | In WhatsApp → Settings → Account → Change Number | If you want everything on one German number |
| Run both simultaneously | WhatsApp (Indian number) + WhatsApp Business (German number) on same phone | Advanced — useful for maintaining both contacts |

The practical recommendation for most Indian students:
Important: Do NOT deactivate your Indian number immediately. You will need it for:
If you need a new phone:
| Option | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Saturn/MediaMarkt | Immediate, warranty | Full price |
| Amazon.de | Good prices, reviews | Shipping time |
| Contract with phone | Monthly payments | Long commitment |
| Used (eBay Kleinanzeigen) | Cheapest | No warranty |
| Refurbished (rebuy.de, asgoodasnew) | Good value, warranty | Limited selection |

An embedded SIM that doesn't require a physical card. Activated digitally.
Telekom, Vodafone, O2, fraenk, and 1&1 offer eSIM on at least some tariffs. Availability can differ between prepaid and contract products, new activation and replacement SIMs, and supported devices. Verify the exact tariff page before ordering.
For your first few days, international travel eSIMs such as Airalo, Holafly, or Nomad can provide data before you activate a German tariff. Many travel eSIMs are data-only and do not provide a German mobile number, so check voice/SMS support, hotspot rules, fair-use limits, and the actual network.
Strategy: Use international eSIM for first week, then get German prepaid SIM.
Telekom, Vodafone, O2, and other providers may offer age-based or promotional tariffs. Check the current age limit, minimum term, post-promotion price, and whether student status is actually required.

💡 Think Mile Tip: Current entry-level examples are around €9-10 per four weeks or month. Compare annual cost because four-week tariffs renew about 13 times per year.
1. Can I buy a SIM card without Anmeldung? Often yes for prepaid, provided the operator's identity process accepts your document and subscriber details. Provider rules differ, so do not enter an address you cannot legitimately use.
2. How long does activation take? It varies from near-immediate activation to several business days depending on provider, delivery, document acceptance, and verification method.
3. Can I port my Indian number to Germany? No. German and Indian numbers are separate systems. You'll get a new German number.
4. What if Video-Ident fails? Try again with better lighting/connection, or use Post-Ident at post office instead.
5. Can I keep my German number if I leave Germany? Prepaid: Only if you keep topping up Contract: Difficult, usually need German address
6. Which provider has best coverage for travel? There is no reliable answer without your route. Germany has four networks: Telekom, Vodafone, Telefónica/O2, and 1&1. Use the Bundesnetzagentur coverage map and check whether a reseller restricts speed, 5G, roaming, or other features.
7. Do I need German language for activation? Most Video-Ident operators speak English. Provider websites often have English options.
8. Can I get a German number before arriving? Some German providers support online ordering and remote identity checks before arrival, but acceptance depends on delivery address and identity documents. Most travel eSIMs are data-only and do not provide a German number.
9. What's the best plan for calling India? Lebara or Lycamobile have cheap rates. Or use WhatsApp/video calls over WiFi.
10. Can I use my German SIM in other EU countries? Yes, EU roaming is included. But check fair use limits — extended use abroad may incur charges.
11. Can I keep my number when switching providers (Rufnummermitnahme)? Yes. You can request number portability when changing provider, including before the old mobile contract ends. Since 1 December 2021, providers may not charge customers a portability fee. Your customer data must match at both providers, and porting the number does not automatically end the old contract.
12. What do German mobile phone numbers look like? German mobile numbers are typically 11-12 digits long (including the leading 0). They start with 015, 016, or 017 depending on the carrier. For example: 0171 1234567. Landline numbers vary by region—Berlin numbers might start with 030, Munich with 089.
13. How do I call a German number from abroad? Use the country code +49 and drop the leading zero. For example, to call 0171 1234567 from abroad, dial +49 171 1234567. This works for WhatsApp calls and SMS too.
14. What if my phone from another country doesn't work in Germany? If your phone will not connect, check whether it is unlocked and supports the required 4G/5G bands and VoLTE. A travel eSIM or roaming can provide temporary data, but do not rely permanently on a SIM from another EU country because roaming fair-use rules apply.
15. How reliable is public Wi-Fi in Germany? Free public WiFi isn't as widespread as you might expect. You'll find it in libraries, museums, airports, train stations, and many cafes. Universities have excellent free WiFi. For consistent access, invest in a mobile data plan or set up home internet.
16. Where can I compare German mobile phone plans? Use comparison sites like Check24.de, Verivox, or PREISVERGLEICH.de to compare plans by price, data, and contract length. These help you find the best deals without visiting every provider.
On 6 June 2026, ALDI TALK's Kombi-Paket S was €8.99 per four weeks for 25 GB, a German number, flat calls/SMS in Germany, and included EU roaming. Treat this as a dated example and check the live offer.
This article was rechecked on 6 June 2026 against current provider pages for ALDI TALK Kombi-Pakete, Telekom MagentaMobil Prepaid M, Vodafone CallYa Allnet Flat S, and fraenk; Bundesnetzagentur guidance on mobile coverage and the four networks, prepaid identity procedures, contract renewal and cancellation, provider changes and free number portability, and 2G retirement plans; and European Commission guidance on EU roaming and fair use. Provider promotions and allowances can change after this review date.
