The most reliable way to prepare for the Einbuergerungstest is to work through the current official BAMF questions, identify what you repeatedly miss, and practise the official 33-question format.
For one applicant, the relevant preparation set contains 300 nationwide questions plus 10 questions for the Bundesland where they live. The full BAMF catalogue contains 300 nationwide and 160 state-specific questions across all 16 states.
Last reviewed: 6 June 2026. BAMF can update the catalogue. Use the current online test centre and current PDF rather than an old app, book, screenshot collection, or memorised answer list.
Use the theory articles to understand unfamiliar concepts, but verify every answer against the current BAMF catalogue.

The test covers:
Do not rely on unofficial claims about the exact number of catalogue questions assigned to each topic. BAMF's current test centre lets you work through the official material directly.
The two tests use closely related official material and the same 33-question structure, but the result threshold matters:
Leben in Deutschland is passed with at least 15 of 33.Leben in Deutschland result as evidence of civic knowledge for naturalisation, BAMF states that at least 17 of 33 is required.Check which test and certificate your authority needs. Do not assume that any result labelled Leben in Deutschland automatically proves the naturalisation requirement without checking the score.
The BAMF Online Test Centre is the primary preparation tool.
It allows you to:
BAMF notes that the online test centre does not meet the statutory accessibility requirements. Applicants who need an accessible alternative should use the accessible catalogue PDF and ask the test centre or authority about available support.
Download the BAMF complete question catalogue for offline study.
The complete PDF includes all 160 state-specific questions. You only need the 10 assigned to your Bundesland, but make sure you select the correct state.
Use the BAMF sample questionnaire to learn the answer-marking format and practise a 60-minute sitting.
An unofficial tool can be convenient, but verify:
Use third-party tools for repetition, not as the authority for disputed answers.
Before making a schedule:
Use a simple error log:

Why I missed it:

Review date:
Correct on next attempt: yes/no
The diagnostic result determines the study duration. There is no official rule that everyone needs one, two, or four weeks.
This is a practical template, not a BAMF requirement. Compress it if your diagnostic score is already strong or extend it if vocabulary and concepts are new.
Study:
Daily loop:
Use Theory Part 1 when you need conceptual explanations.
Study:
Build a short timeline from the official questions. Avoid memorising dates without understanding which event they identify.
Use Theory Part 2 for context, then return to BAMF questions.
Study:
Group similar questions together. This makes it easier to distinguish closely worded answers.
Use Theory Part 3 for explanations.
Do not study all 160 state questions unless you have a separate reason. Confirm with the test centre which Bundesland applies if you move around the test date.
If you already score comfortably above 17:
Do not use one good practice score as the only readiness signal. Repeat under realistic conditions.
Repeatedly reading the correct option can create false confidence.
Use active recall:
Mark questions as:
Review the last two groups. A lucky correct answer still represents a knowledge gap.
The test assesses civic knowledge, but the questionnaire is in German. Learn recurring terms such as:
Grundgesetz Basic Law
Grundrecht fundamental right
Rechtsstaat state governed by law
Bundestag federal parliament
Bundesrat federal council
Bundesland federal state
Gemeinde municipality
Wahl election
Gleichberechtigung equal rights
Meinungsfreiheit freedom of expression
Religionsfreiheit freedom of religion
For each missed question:
Do not translate mechanically when the official German term has a specific constitutional meaning.
The relevant preparation set includes 10 questions for your Bundesland, and the test questionnaire contains three state questions.
Use the official selector rather than an old list because state-related material and images can be revised.
Typical knowledge includes:
Learn the official image-based questions as well as the text. Do not substitute current news trivia unless it appears in the catalogue.
The score is based on correct answers. The rules do not impose a separate guessing penalty, so do not leave an answer blank merely because you are uncertain.
Pay close attention to words such as:
nichtkeingegenverbotendarfmussMany avoidable errors come from overlooking the condition in the question.
Seventeen is the legal pass mark. For preparation, aim to score clearly above it across several sessions so one difficult set or reading error does not decide the result.
An arbitrary target such as exactly 25 is not an official readiness requirement.
Follow the instructions from your registered test centre.
At minimum:
The official sample explains how answers and corrections must be marked. Practise that format before test day.
The test centre cannot give help on question content or announce a valid result on the spot. BAMF evaluates the test under the official procedure and sends the result certificate.
For registration details, read Where to Register for the Einbuergerungstest.
Keep your registration and payment records until the result arrives.
The official result states:
erfolgreich teilgenommen when passed, orteilgenommen when the pass mark was not reachedBAMF's examination rules provide for the result to be sent by post. Do not rely on an unofficial fixed processing-time promise.
Store the original certificate safely. The rules provide a controlled replacement process if the original is lost.
Under Section 10 of the Nationality Act, a successful Einbuergerungstest normally proves the required knowledge of Germany's legal and social order and living conditions.
The test is only one part of naturalisation. Standard naturalisation generally also requires German at B1 level, but the Nationality Act contains age, illness, disability, hardship, and other specific provisions. Some applicants can prove civic knowledge through another recognised route or may fall under an exception.
Ask the competent citizenship authority which evidence applies to your individual case. Do not register for the test solely because a blog says everyone must take it.
A or B instead of the answerFor your state, BAMF describes 310 relevant preparation questions: 300 nationwide and 10 for the Bundesland where you live. The complete national PDF contains 160 state-specific questions across all states.
There are 33: 30 nationwide and three for your Bundesland.
At least 17 correct answers for the Einbuergerungstest.
Sixty minutes.
BAMF provides the online preparation tool without a separate practice fee. Internet or device costs remain your own.
BAMF publishes the catalogue used to prepare the approved questionnaires. Always use its current version because the catalogue can be revised.
Section 10 of the Nationality Act says naturalisation courses are offered for preparation; participation is not compulsory.
No. The four-week plan is a template. Use a diagnostic test to decide how much preparation you need.
The official questionnaire and sample are in German. Prepare with the German wording.
No. The civic-knowledge test and language evidence are separate.
No. Fifteen passes the orientation-course component; BAMF requires at least 17 for the LiD result to serve as naturalisation evidence.
If you do not pass, ask an authorised test centre about a new registration and available date. Do not rely on unofficial claims about immediate availability or waiting periods.
