A German Lebenslauf should make your relevant qualifications easy to verify. It does not need to reveal your entire personal history or follow one legally required design.
For most jobs, internships, and Werkstudent applications, use a concise, reverse-chronological CV tailored to the vacancy. Follow the employer's portal and document instructions when they differ from general convention.
Last reviewed: 6 June 2026. Hiring practices vary by employer, industry, role, and application system. A photo and several traditional personal details remain common in some German applications but are not universally required.

A university may request a longer academic CV or a specific template. Do not force a job-application convention onto an admissions checklist.
A practical order for an early-career application is:
There is no single mandatory order. Put the strongest evidence near the top and keep section names conventional, such as Work Experience, Education, Projects, and Skills.
A full street address is usually unnecessary unless the employer or institution asks for it. Applicants outside Germany can state their real city and country; do not invent or borrow a German address.
Some German CVs still include:
These details are not universal requirements. The Federal Employment Agency describes family status and nationality as voluntary and says a photo is not mandatory. It also says signing is not strictly necessary.
Visa or work-authorisation status can be useful when it resolves an obvious hiring question, but describe it briefly and accurately.
Germany's General Act on Equal Treatment protects applicants against discrimination based on racial or ethnic origin, gender, religion or belief, disability, age, and sexual identity. The Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency's anonymised-application model omits photo, name, address, birth date, marital status, and origin so that qualifications remain central.
A photo is optional. A suitable application should not be rejected merely because the CV has no photo.
Choose based on the instructions and your preference:
If you include one, use a recent, clear, professional head-and-shoulders image with a neutral background. There is no universal legally required passport-photo size for a German CV. Avoid casual selfies, heavy filters, and identity-document photos unless a recipient specifically requests that format.
List qualifications in reverse chronological order. Include:
Example:
Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science
Example Institute of Technology, Pune, India
Aug 2021 - May 2025
CGPA: 8.4/10
Thesis: Forecasting urban energy demand with Python
Relevant modules: Data Structures, Databases, Machine Learning
School education can be shortened or removed once higher education and experience provide stronger evidence.
There is no reliable universal table that converts every Indian CGPA directly into a German grade. Institutions may apply their own rules and may need information about the maximum grade and minimum passing grade.
Use the original result and scale, such as 8.4/10. Add a German equivalent only when it comes from the receiving institution, uni-assist, an official evaluation, or a clearly labelled estimate requested for the application. Never present a self-calculated result as official.
For each role, include:
Use evidence rather than generic duties:
Working Student, Data Operations
Example GmbH, Berlin | Oct 2025 - Present
- Automated a weekly quality report in Python, reducing manual preparation time.
- Investigated recurring data errors and documented validation rules for the team.
- Presented findings in English and German to product and operations stakeholders.
Quantify results only when the number is accurate and defensible. Scope, frequency, users, scale, or time saved can be useful even when revenue figures are unavailable.
Projects can compensate for limited formal experience. State what you built, your contribution, the tools used, and the result. Link only to work that is public, functional, and safe to share.
Explain significant timeline gaps briefly and neutrally when they would otherwise be confusing. Do not disclose sensitive personal or medical detail.
Group skills so the reader can evaluate them quickly:
Programming: Python, TypeScript, SQL
Data: pandas, PostgreSQL, Power BI
Tools: Git, Docker, Jira
Methods: REST APIs, automated testing, data modelling
Avoid:
Mirror the vacancy's terminology only where it accurately describes your experience.
Use a recognised scale where possible:
English: C1
German: B1 (Goethe-Zertifikat, 2025)
Hindi: Native
Do not inflate proficiency. If certification is pending, distinguish the current level from the target level.
Ananya_Sharma_CV.pdfIf you're applying to several universities, use the Document Master Folder Structure's naming convention — Lastname_Firstname_Document_University_YYYY-MM-DD.pdf — to keep each CV version straight.
The Federal Employment Agency recommends a tabular, reverse-chronological CV and generally no more than two pages. Treat that as practical guidance, not a legal limit. A strong one-page student CV is fine; two pages are reasonable when relevant content justifies them.
Some portals parse uploaded CVs into form fields. To reduce parsing errors:
PDF is common because it preserves layout, but it is not always the required format. Upload the exact file type requested by the employer or university.
Europass provides a free multilingual CV builder and can be useful when:
It is not the mandatory German CV format. Tailor the content, remove empty sections, and check whether a simpler layout communicates your evidence better.
A cover letter is not required for every application. Submit one when:
Do not upload extra documents indiscriminately. German application packages may include certificates, references, and transcripts, but the portal may request only selected evidence or ask for it later. Follow the checklist and combine files only when permitted.
Never write References available upon request; it uses space without adding evidence. Provide references only when requested and with each person's permission.

No. These are traditional voluntary details, not universal requirements. Follow any explicit form fields or instructions.
The Federal Employment Agency says signing is not strictly necessary, although it may signal that the version is current. Follow the recipient's requirement.
Use the language requested in the vacancy or programme instructions. If the advertisement is in German and expects German communication, a German application is usually appropriate. Do not submit a weak machine translation without review.
No. One page often works for students and recent graduates. Two pages are acceptable when every section is relevant and concise.
Keep the original grade and scale unless an official process or the recipient provides a conversion. Label any requested estimate clearly.
