Spemann Graduate School of Biology and Medicine (SGBM)

SGBM is an international and multidisciplinary doctoral programme at the University of Freiburg. It brings together doctoral researchers across biology, medicine, biotechnology, and drug development in a structured English-language research environment.

Academic requirements

Short-listed candidates invited for an interview have to present their Master's thesis project to the selection committee. In addition, each candidate has three individual interviews with a principal investigator of the school.

Minimum GPA

No fixed minimum GPA is published on the current official programme page.

English requirements

The official SGBM application page states that fluency in written and spoken English is essential. TOEFL or Cambridge CPE results are recommended for applicants who want to document their English proficiency, but they are not mandatory.

German requirements

Not required. If they wish, international students can attend German courses.

Accepted bachelor fields

Applicants must hold an excellent recent university degree, specifically a master's degree or German Diploma, in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, molecular medicine, pharmacy, biotechnology, or a related field. Candidates with a medical degree are eligible for the MD/PhD route.
