North American Studies (NAS)

North American Studies is a transdisciplinary MA that examines North America in global context through literary and cultural studies, political science, economics, history, and postcolonial perspectives. It is jointly supported by the Universities of Bonn and Cologne and is strongly research-oriented.

Academic requirements

BA programme in a field that will provide a solid basis for the MA North American Studies. Preferably, your educational background will include a special attention to North America and its cultures or a BA thesis with a focus on North America.

English requirements

English at CEFR C1. The official NAS pages give examples including TOEFL iBT 94 or IELTS 7.0, and waive the requirement for graduates of English and American Studies or entirely English-taught programmes.

Accepted bachelor fields

Applicants need a bachelor's degree in a field that provides a strong basis for the programme, such as literary, cultural, or media studies, linguistics, political science, economics, history, postcolonial studies, or a similar subject. The official NAS page prefers prior academic work with a North America focus.
