Programme Overview

The Master of Science programme in physics provides a profound, research-oriented education in physics as well as a general knowledge of the most relevant scientific methods. The main goals of physics are to gain a deep understanding of the universe at its most fundamental levels and to extend such knowledge to more complicated systems ranging from the subatomic to the cosmological scale. Physics can then be considered the basis for all natural sciences and the bearing structure of any modern technological development. This is well reflected in our Master's programme in physics, which prepares graduates for careers in research and teaching at the university level or research in industrial laboratories. Students enrolling in the two-year Master's programme will broaden their previous background in general physics and will be supported in carrying out their first independent research project in one of our specialisation areas: biophysics and soft matter, condensed matter physics and nanoscience, econophysics, plasma physics, quantum information and technologies.

Academic requirements: Deadline: 15 November for the summer semester 15 May for the winter semester
Minimum GPA: overall grade of 2.4 or better, or Bachelor's thesis graded 2.0 or better, or being in the top 20% of the applicant's year group

The Master's degree programme in physics requires language skills at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Applicants must fulfil this requirement by submitting one of the following language certificates: Higher education degree in a study programme with English as the sole language of instruction 5.5 points or more in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS, IELTS Academic (IELTS online) or IELTS Indicator); if both score and CEFR level are indicated, the higher indicated language proficiency level will be recognised First Certificate in English (FCE), Certificate in English Language Skills (CELS), Vantage or Business English Certificate (BEC), Vantage Cambridge exam English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) (Cambridge University) 400 (listening), 385 (reading), 160 (speaking) and 150 (writing) points or more in the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) 72 points or more in the Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based (TOEFL iBT or TOEFL iBT home edition) Level II of UNIcert® PTE Academic, with a score of 59 or higher CEFR B 2 level or higher shown on the higher education entrance qualification (A level of language proficiency which is partly at CEFR B 2 and lower is not recognised.)
