Modern Indian Studies

Interdisciplinary English-language MA on the social, cultural, political, and economic dynamics of modern India, combining perspectives from the humanities, social sciences, and economics and including study of a modern Indian language.

English requirements

English at CEFR C1 or higher. Accepted proof includes Cambridge English Scale 180, IELTS Academic Band 7, TOEFL iBT 95, Pearson Academic 76, UNIcert III, or another C1-level certificate. Applicants may also qualify for exemption through recent qualifying study or work in specific English-speaking countries or a recent fully English-taught degree meeting the published C1 conditions. Proof is required by enrolment.

German requirements

German language skills are not required for this study programme.

Accepted bachelor fields

A subject-relevant bachelor's degree or equivalent with at least 180 ECTS and at least 50 ECTS in a related discipline. Relevant fields explicitly include Development Studies, Geography, History, Gender or Diversity Studies, Indian Studies or Indology, Islam Studies, Ethnology or Cultural Anthropology, Media Studies, Political Science, Religious Studies, Social and Economic History, Sociology, and Economics. For the study focus 'Development Economics of India', 30 of those 50 ECTS must be in Economics.
