International students normally extend a residence permit for study purposes, not their original entry visa. The competent immigration authority is the Auslaenderbehoerde for your registered main residence.
The most important rule is simple: submit the extension application through a channel accepted by your authority before your current residence permit expires. Booking an appointment and making an application are not necessarily the same action.

After arrival and issuance of a residence permit, the recurring process is usually an extension of the residence permit.
Read both sides of your electronic residence permit and its supplementary sheet. Conditions relating to employment, the study purpose, or the institution remain important.
There is no single nationwide rule requiring every student to apply exactly 8, 10, or 12 weeks before expiry. Local systems set their own opening windows and procedures. For example, Berlin currently permits its online study-permit application from four months before expiry.
Use this practical sequence:
Do not wait for the physical appointment if the authority requires an earlier online, email, or postal application.
The legal protection under Section 81 depends on a qualifying application, not merely on your intention to apply.
When in doubt, ask the authority in writing whether your submitted action counts as the application.
Section 81(4) of the Residence Act states that when a person applies to extend an existing residence title, or requests another residence title, before the current title expires, the existing title generally continues until the authority decides.
This continuation includes the existing ancillary conditions. If the current student permit authorises work subject to stated limits, those existing conditions generally continue during the Section 81(4) period.
A Fiktionsbescheinigung documents the legal effect of the pending application. The application creates the statutory effect; the certificate is evidence of it.
Request one when:
Keep the expired residence card, current passport, application proof, and Fiktionsbescheinigung together.
Do not assume that applying after expiry produces the same protection. Under Section 81(4), the authority may order continued effect after a late application to avoid undue hardship, but this is not automatic.
If the deadline has passed:
Section 16b provides that a study residence permit is extended when the study purpose has not yet been achieved and can still be achieved within a reasonable period.

German federal law does not set a universal extension rule of exactly 30 ECTS per year. Nor does it establish one fixed maximum of 10, 12, or any other number of semesters for every degree.

A delay is not automatically a refusal. Its length, reasons, recent progress, and the university's assessment can all matter.
If illness, family circumstances, programme changes, examination scheduling, or another documented event affected your studies, explain the relevant facts without adding unnecessary sensitive detail.

There is no general student-extension rule that the passport must always have exactly six months remaining beyond the requested permit. However, a residence permit cannot normally be issued beyond the passport's validity.
Renew an expiring passport early and tell the authority if a renewal is pending.
Authorities increasingly use digital biometric-photo workflows. Printed photos may not be accepted in the same way they were previously. Follow the current instructions for your office rather than purchasing a photo based on an old checklist.
You must show that your living costs, including adequate health-insurance coverage, are secured.

Berlin, for example, states that account statements for the previous six months and other income can also be considered for an extension.
Ask the local authority what evidence and coverage period it requires. A job contract alone may be insufficient if the income is too low, irregular, time-limited, or incompatible with the permit's work conditions.
Adequate health insurance is part of the livelihood requirement.
Provide the evidence requested for your insurance type:
Travel insurance is generally not a substitute for adequate German student health coverage at the residence-permit stage. Resolve contribution arrears or coverage gaps with the insurer before applying where possible.
Use the official website for the Auslaenderbehoerde responsible for your registered main residence. Do not apply to a former city after moving unless that authority confirms it remains responsible.
Confirm:
Complete the actual application and retain dated proof. Use accurate information that matches your passport, address registration, university records, and financial evidence.
Check email and spam folders. Upload or send missing documents through the instructed channel and keep proof.
Bring the originals and documents named in the appointment invitation. The authority may verify identity, collect biometric data, review originals, or clarify the study plan.
There is no universal interview script or guaranteed appointment length. Answer questions truthfully and concisely.

Fee reductions or exemptions can apply in specific cases, including some publicly funded scholarships and other legally defined circumstances. The local authority may also charge for an on-site digital photo or another separate service.
The electronic card is not always handed over at the appointment. Berlin currently estimates four to six weeks for production after a positive decision, but this is not a nationwide processing guarantee.
Travel is one of the highest-risk areas because proof of lawful stay in Germany and permission to re-enter are separate practical questions.

An application receipt alone may prove a submission but may not be accepted by airlines or foreign border authorities as a travel document.
When Section 81(4) applies, the previous residence title and its ancillary employment conditions generally continue until the decision.
Do not assume that the pending application grants broader rights than the old permit. Continue following the conditions printed on the permit and supplementary sheet.

If an employer is uncertain, provide the Section 81(4) Fiktionsbescheinigung and seek written clarification from the authority.
Prepare a factual package:
Avoid promising a completion date that your university records cannot support.
Do not assume that every switch is automatically covered. The current title or supplementary sheet may connect the permit to a particular institution, programme, or purpose.
Before changing:
An Urlaubssemester can affect whether the study purpose is being actively pursued. Contact the authority before the leave begins and provide the university's documentation and reason.
The printed expiry date does not guarantee that the permit will remain untouched when an essential condition disappears. Under the Residence Act, an authority may shorten a permit when a material requirement is no longer met.
If you withdraw, are exmatriculated, or definitively fail the programme, obtain advice immediately about another residence title or departure. Do not assume that a job offer automatically converts the student permit.
After successfully completing a German degree, eligible graduates can apply for a residence permit to seek qualified employment. Apply for the appropriate title before the student permit expires and follow the local authority's process.

Ask what amount, period, and evidence type are missing. Provide updated records rather than unrelated account screenshots.
