dMAT Structure Explained: Core and General Academic Module

The dMAT has a simple headline structure, but many students misunderstand the second half of the exam. For APS India, affected Master's applicants do not choose a degree-specific Engineering, Business, Finance, Computer Science, or Management module. They take the Core Module plus the Subject Module called the General Academic Module.

Quick Structure

The official dMAT structure page says the dMAT consists of a core module and a subject module. The official India page specifies that APS India candidates in the affected introductory groups take the dMAT with the General Academic Module.

That wording matters. It is more accurate to say:

APS candidates take a subject module, but it is the cross-disciplinary General Academic Module rather than a degree-specific subject test.

Core Module

The Core Module measures general cognitive and analytical skills. The official General Academic Module preparatory material gives three Core subtests:

That gives 75 minutes of stated Core Module question-working time.

Figure Sequences

This subtest uses visual patterns. Students identify how figures change from one grid to the next.

Rules may include:

• position changes;
• orientation changes;
• colour cycles;
• horizontal, vertical, or diagonal movement;
• clockwise or counter-clockwise movement;
• boundary movement;
• bouncing;
• increasing movement by x + 1;
• multiple objects following independent rules;
• no disappearance or overlap.

Mathematical Equations

This subtest uses small equation systems. In the official task type, each letter represents an integer from 1 to 20, and the student must find the value that satisfies the equations.

The skill is not advanced mathematics. It is fast substitution, rearrangement, reverse operations, and mental calculation under time pressure.

Latin Squares

This subtest uses a 5 by 5 grid with letters. Each letter may appear only once in each row and only once in each column.

The skill is constraint reasoning: eliminate candidates from the row and column, solve easier cells first when needed, and keep the grid state mentally because notes are not allowed.

Subject Module: General Academic Module

For APS India, the second module is the General Academic Module.

It is not safe to describe this as "no subject module" or "only quantitative reasoning." The official sample includes four different academic passages:

The sample contains 27 Part 2 questions, but that is only the sample-paper count. The official material does not publish the real-exam passage count, question count, or difficulty distribution.

The General Academic Module tests whether students can:

• understand a short academic teaching passage;
• extract definitions, assumptions, variables, and relationships;
• apply information to a new scenario;
• move between prose, formulas, diagrams, graphs, units, and cases;
• combine provided information with foundational academic reasoning.

Timing and Test-Centre Duration

Do not collapse every timing number into one row. Separate these:

Practical implication: when practising Core, use three separate 25-minute blocks, not one vague single-block Core mock.

The current official preparation material shows:

• four answer options;
• one correct answer;
• no written notes;
• no calculator;
• short instructions during the exam;
• fuller instructions in the preparation material.

Students should therefore practise under these constraints:

• solve visually and mentally;
• avoid scratch-paper habits;
• make decisions quickly;
• move on when stuck;
• return to uncertain items only if the interface and time allow it.

Avoid content that turns possible preparation areas into an announced syllabus. The safe wording is:

How This Changes Preparation

The right preparation sequence is:

1. Learn the Core task rules.
2. Practise the three Core subtests in 25-minute blocks.
3. Study the General Academic Module sample across all four passages.
4. Practise reading academic passages without notes.
5. Revise only targeted foundational concepts.

The wrong sequence is:

• studying full engineering textbooks;
• memorising large formula collections;
• preparing only according to your bachelor's branch;
• treating TestAS material as official dMAT questions;
• assuming the sample topics are the full syllabus.
