Deductive research starts from a theory or hypothesis and tests it with data.
Simple pattern:

Example: A researcher predicts that students who work more than 20 hours per week have lower average grades, then collects data to test that prediction.
Inductive research starts from observations and builds a theory or explanation.
Simple pattern:
observations -> patterns -> theory
Example: A researcher interviews students about part-time work, notices repeated themes, and develops an explanation of how work affects study routines.
A causal relationship asks whether one factor affects another.
Example: Does more study time improve exam performance?
A causal mechanism asks how or why that effect happens.
Example: More study time improves performance because students retrieve information more often and reduce forgetting.
Mixed-method research combines quantitative and qualitative approaches.
Example: A researcher first surveys 500 students to identify patterns, then interviews 20 students to understand the reasons behind those patterns.

A researcher wants to know whether students who attend a visa-preparation workshop submit more complete visa files. She collects data from 300 students: workshop attendance, number of missing documents, and visa outcome.
Question: what type of research is this mainly?
Solution:
The researcher collects numerical data from many students and compares measurable outcomes. This is mainly quantitative research.
Reading skill tested: classify the method based on the data and question, not based on the topic.

Researchers study why international students choose one German city over another. They use two approaches.
