A practical first-month control sheet for Indian students after landing in Germany. Focus on the time-sensitive blockers first: housing access, enrollment, health insurance, Anmeldung, bank/blocked-account payouts, and residence-permit evidence.

Arrival

Get from airport to verified accommodation with communication, money, food, and key access sorted.

Get immediate data through temporary roaming, a travel eSIM, or an airport SIM only if you really need one

Tip: Airport SIMs can be convenient but are often worse value. A travel eSIM or short roaming pack can cover the first 24-48 hours, then buy a normal prepaid SIM such as Aldi Talk, Congstar, Lidl Connect, or a city/provider option.

Use the EUR cash or forex / low-FX card you prepared before departure; use an airport ATM only as a backup and avoid airport currency exchange desks

Tip: If you must withdraw at the airport, prefer a bank-branded ATM, check the displayed fee and conversion rate, decline dynamic currency conversion when offered, and avoid taking more cash than you can store safely.

Download DB Navigator (called "DB: Reisen & Unterwegs" on Android) and Google Maps (save offline area for your city)

Travel to accommodation, cross-check DB Navigator with Google Maps, and keep your host or dorm office updated if your train is delayed

Check in, collect your room key, photograph the room condition, and ask about dorm internet (LAN registration or WiFi credentials via Studentenwerk portal)

Tip: Take quick photos of existing damage before unpacking. It helps if there is a later deposit or repair dispute.

Buy essentials at the nearest supermarket: breakfast, toiletries, detergent, trash bags, simple food, and a reusable bottle for the next 24-48 hours

Tip: Tap water is generally drinkable in Germany. Supermarkets may close early on Saturdays and usually close on Sundays, so buy enough for 1-2 days.

Book or confirm your Bürgeramt appointment for Anmeldung only after you have a real registrable address and move-in date

Tip: The legal clock is tied to moving into a dwelling, not airport arrival. If no slot is available, keep dated evidence of booking attempts and follow the city office instructions.

Tip: Appointment waits vary by city and can be much longer than a few weeks. Save proof of booking attempts, emails, uploaded forms, and authority replies.

Settle In

Make the city usable: neighborhood basics, phone data, university systems, and orientation calendar.

Explore your neighborhood: locate pharmacy, supermarket, nearest transport stops, ATM, parcel pickup point, and emergency route to campus

Get a proper local prepaid SIM or eSIM option; bring passport for identity verification and keep your Indian SIM active for bank OTPs

Tip: Starter packs are often available at supermarkets, kiosks, or provider stores. Activation can require video or in-store identity verification.

Download your city's transport app (MVV, BVG, HVV, etc.), save your campus route, and check whether your semester ticket is already active

Set up your university email, Moodle / student portal, password recovery, and calendar sync so orientation updates do not get missed

Set up university VPN (Cisco AnyConnect or equivalent): required for off-campus access to journals, library catalogue, and internal systems

Tip: Download instructions are on your university IT portal or Rechenzentrum (computing center) website.

If not already done, finalize health insurance and ask the insurer to send the required status notification to your university

Tip: Universities usually need proof of valid health insurance for enrollment. Follow your university and insurer instructions; a PDF certificate alone may not be enough if electronic reporting is required.

Join official and student-run WhatsApp or Telegram groups for your course, but verify admin deadlines against university pages before acting

Get Connected

Start money, insurance, campus, and food routines once you have working access and documents.

Tip: Use a photo studio, photo booth, dm/Rossmann-style photo service, or an official digital-photo option where accepted. Requirements can vary by authority and appointment type.

Start a German bank account application with the provider that fits your documents and address situation

Tip: Online and branch banks can ask for different documents: passport, visa, enrollment proof, tax details, address, or later Anmeldung. Do not wait for perfect conditions if your chosen bank lets you start with a postal address.

Set up health insurance SEPA direct debit once your German IBAN is active, then confirm the insurer has sent the electronic notification to your university

Follow your blocked-account provider checklist to activate monthly payouts

Tip: Most setups need a payout IBAN and address; some also ask for enrollment proof, tax details, or use a bundled account. Follow your provider portal rather than generic advice.

Get library access: activate your card or account, learn book return rules, and check whether off-campus journal access needs VPN

Locate the Studentenwerk office for housing, Mensa card, counseling, hardship support, and dorm repair issues

Find the Mensa, check the weekly menu, payment method, opening hours, and whether your student ID needs separate top-up

Check course, lab, tutorial, and exam registration deadlines; some course portals close within the first week

Register only after a real move-in to registrable housing, and keep evidence if appointments are delayed.

Get Wohnungsgeberbestätigung from your housing provider for the address where you actually moved in

Tip: Under BMG §19, the housing provider must cooperate. If confirmation is refused or delayed, inform the registration authority and keep written evidence.

Fill out the Anmeldeformular from your city's portal, using your exact address spelling, move-in date, and landlord details from the confirmation form

Attend your Bürgeramt appointment with the city-specific documents, usually passport, visa if applicable, Wohnungsgeberbestätigung, and completed registration form

Tip: A rental contract can be helpful but is not a substitute for the landlord confirmation where the city requires that confirmation.

Receive Meldebestätigung / Anmeldebestätigung, scan it immediately, and keep copies for bank, residence permit, tax ID tracking, and official records

Watch for your Steueridentifikationsnummer (tax ID) by post after first registration; if it has not arrived after 3 months, request it from BZSt

Tip: BZSt does not provide the tax ID by phone or email for data-protection reasons.

Submit health insurance certificate to Immatrikulationsamt and confirm whether your insurer must transmit it electronically rather than as a PDF

Submit semester fee payment proof if not already done, and check when the payment unlocks enrollment, student ID, and semester ticket

Week 2 · Week 2
University Setup

Turn enrollment into daily operating access: student card, ticket, modules, exams, and advice.

Attend orientation sessions, especially module-choice, exam-regulation, library, lab-safety, and international-office sessions

Collect your student ID card from the Studierendensekretariat and test whether it works for buildings, library, Mensa, and transport

Set up your semester ticket (Deutschland-Semesterticket or local equivalent, check your university)

Register for modules, tutorials, labs, and exams in the correct portals; note add/drop deadlines and screenshot confirmations

Find departmental WhatsApp, Slack, Telegram, Discord, or mailing-list channels where timetable changes and study groups are shared

Meet your academic advisor or program coordinator if you are unsure about module load, prerequisites, exams, or switching tracks

Open a Mensa account if required (some universities use RFID card + top-up)

Check your Rückmeldung (re-enrollment) deadline for next semester. You must pay the semester fee again by the deadline to stay enrolled

Tip: Deadlines are typically January (for summer semester) and July (for winter semester). Missing it can result in exmatriculation.

Watch for Steueridentifikationsnummer in your post, put your name clearly on the mailbox, and save the number for part-time job payroll

Set up a postal address routine: check your mailbox every few days, open official letters immediately, and photograph important notices

When a Rundfunkbeitrag letter arrives, check whether your room/flat already has a contribution number before registering or paying separately

Tip: Students are not automatically exempt. In a WG, usually one contribution covers the dwelling; dorm rules depend on whether your room counts as its own dwelling.

Keep one evidence folder for Anmeldung, enrollment, bank, blocked-account, insurance, residence-permit, and housing messages

Apply for a Deutsche Bahn BahnCard 25 if you plan to travel (saves 25% on all DB tickets)

Tip: ⚠️ BahnCard 25 auto-renews every year (€62.90). Set a calendar reminder to cancel at least 6 weeks before renewal if you don't plan to continue.

Explore student discounts for museums, theaters, software, language courses, gyms, local transport, and second-hand stores

Build a budget spreadsheet, track EUR spend vs. your blocked-account monthly release, and separate one-time setup costs from recurring rent/insurance/transport costs
