Modern East Asian Studies (MA MEAS)

MA MEAS is an English-taught programme on contemporary East Asia for graduates with prior East Asian regional studies training, advanced Chinese, Japanese, or Korean language ability, and a strong social-science or economics background. It deepens methodological, regional, and language skills through advanced East Asian modules and an independent research thesis.

Academic requirements

Depending on an applicant’s prior education and training, conditional admission may be granted, requiring up to 30 ECTS credits in additional courses

Minimum GPA

Average grade of 2.5 or better based on the German grading system.

English requirements

Proof of English proficiency such as TOEFL, IELTS, CET, or similar tests. No test result is required if English is the applicant's mother tongue or the previous degree was taught in English.

German requirements

German language skills are recommended, but they are NOT required.

Accepted bachelor fields

BA or equivalent degree in East Asian regional studies with a social-science or economics focus, advanced knowledge of an East Asian language, and 240 ECTS attained in the bachelor's degree.
