Geography of Environmental Risks and Human Security

This joint MSc of the University of Bonn and UNU-EHS studies environmental risks, natural hazards, and human security in an interdisciplinary and research-oriented framework. It combines human geography, earth system science, risk governance, sustainability, and disaster-related application areas in an international setting.

Academic requirements

A strong motivation to contribute to the area of human security and management of risks related to environmental change is a prerequisite. Applicants should be highly motivated to learn in a multicultural and interdisciplinary environment.

English requirements

English proficiency of at least CEFR B2 is required, and C1 is strongly recommended. The official sources state that non-native speakers must submit a recognised certificate such as TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge, or telc.

Accepted bachelor fields

Applicants need a first higher education qualification in geography or a related relevant field. The official Bonn and UNU pages state that the majority of prior coursework must relate to human geography and social sciences with a spatial focus, science methodology and empirical research methods, and physical geography, geosciences, or environmental sciences with an earth system science focus; the programme is not targeted at engineering graduates.
