Programme Overview

The MA Cultural Studies (Kulturanthropologie) at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz analyses the diversity of human life worlds through the lenses of European ethnology, folklore, cultural and social anthropology, media studies, and sociology. The programme emphasises everyday cultural practices and their historical and contemporary transformations, with a strong focus on qualitative research and critical reflection. Courses are held in both German and English: all thematic seminars are conducted in English, while core lectures are primarily in German. Students must demonstrate proficiency in both languages. A thesis is required. Two intakes per year (winter and summer semesters). Non-German degree holders must apply for degree recognition (€60 fee, up to six weeks processing).

Deadline: All applicants: 1 March for the following summer semester (starting 1 April) 1 September for the following winter semester (starting 1 October) Note: Students with a non-German degree must apply for degree recognition when applying to JGU Mainz. This application costs 60 EUR and takes up to six weeks to be processed once the payment is received. Apply as early as possible and at least seven weeks before the degree application.
