International Max Planck Research School on the Social and Political Constitution of the Economy (IMPRS-SPCE)

Three-and-a-half-year doctoral programme in economic sociology and political economy, offered jointly by the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies, University of Cologne, and University of Duisburg-Essen. Taught in English.

Academic requirements

Candidates should hold a Master's degree or equivalent in political science, sociology, or related fields and possess strong English skills. Students with foreign degrees may be admitted if their degrees are equivalent to a German "Diplom", "Magister" or MA.

English requirements

High English proficiency required. Ability to do scholarly work in English is a prerequisite.

German requirements

Knowledge of German is not mandatory for completing the programme. However, IMPRS-SPCE students are strongly encouraged to learn some basic German in order to participate more fully in life at the institute, the university, and the city.
