Germany's automotive sector is not transitioning to EVs in the abstract: it is doing it at specific factories, with specific capital budgets, on a fixed timeline. BMW's iX production in Dingolfing, Volkswagen's €170bn 2024–2028 investment programme, with EV platforms (SSP, MEB+) as the centrepiece, Bosch's e-mobility powertrain expansion in Ansbach and Feuerbach. These are live projects hiring engineers right now. What makes OTH Regensburg and Esslingen valuable is not their QS ranking; it is that both sit inside the Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria automotive cluster and have formalised industry partnerships that give students access to internship and thesis opportunities inside these companies from semester one. I have seen students from OTH Regensburg walk into BMW interviews before they finish their coursework because the faculty contact opened the door.
This guide deliberately covers the EV-transition crossover: mechatronics, e-mobility powertrains, and programmes that bridge mechanical and automotive disciplines. The weakest SOP opening I see in this field, consistently, is 'I am passionate about automobiles.' It tells the admissions committee nothing they cannot infer from the fact that you applied to an automotive programme. What German mechanical and automotive engineering professors actually look for is a specific sub-discipline: powertrain, chassis engineering, lightweight materials, production automation, and a coherent reason why the programme's particular research group or industry partnership matches that interest. One sentence naming the professor whose work you read and the direction you want to take it in your thesis is more effective than two paragraphs of general automotive enthusiasm. I tell every student I work with: your SOP should make it hard for the professor to imagine admitting someone else.
Applying only to RWTH and TUM without accounting for the German language barrier, over 80% of seats at these two universities require B2/C1 German; Indian applicants who discover this at application time have no safety tier and miss the entire intake
